So, farewell then, Gordon Brown

It wasn’t for want of trying on the Unite union’s part. Apart from Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley’s letter, political director Charlie Whelan (who is widely thought by his MP chums to be preparing an exit from the union now) was ringing round Labour MPs yesterday, trying to persuade them of the merits of a Lab-Lib coalition.

He didn’t: the member who muttered: “This is suicide. We’ve got secretaries of state who can’t let go of their car keys” was by no means alone, and by the afternoon the parliamentary Labour party was telling Brown to ditch the coalition. It’s almost as though those talks didn’t need to fail.

Update: Forgot to say, Peter Kenyon has an interesting insider account of the dying hours of the Lab-Lib coalition talks here.
